NAME: Ray Park TYPE: autographed trading card SUBJECT: "X-men" motion picture PRODUCED BY: The Topps Company DATE: 2000 NOTES:
When the set first came out, not all the signers were able to get their autographs in on time for its release. Park's auto was much delayed and couldn't be included in the regular packs, nor in promotional deals with distributors and dealers like the Anna Paquin and Rebecca Romijn autographs. Topps decided to hold them back, but a few got "snuck" out and quickly became the most sought-after card in the series by fans believing they would never be released. Prices rose to a hefty $500 US. Insiders however, knew the truth: Park signed about 1000 cards, one of the highest numbers by any of the signers, and his card was to become a case topper (bonus card for buying a whole case) for an upcoming Marvel-related series also by Topps. Prices fell to $50, leaving the original investors who paid the ridiculous $500, a little embarrassed. If there is a lesson to be learned, it's that collectors should shop around and be careful of the prices. Anything can happen. |
